Dad died without a will and with almost nil assets. I’m the only heir. However, he has a small amount of around $2000 in the bank, which the bank denies to forward me, the reason being I’m not named in the account. Should I go to probate?

Well, you don’t need to go through the elaborate probate process. You haven’t mentioned which state you’re from. Most states allows provision for ‘small estate’, which would suffice in your case. You’ll just need the filing fee. Rest, I think, you’ll be able to manage on your own, with maybe a little help from the clerk of the court.
