Since May 5, a debt collector has been calling me for a debt that I don’t owe. Further from his thick voice it seems that he is from India and this is nothing but a scam. He wants me to make my payment as moneygram and further fax them my id. Should I register a complaint with the FTC?

Till date, we have received many such complaints just like your. These are undoubtedly scam and trying to make a fool out of you. We have developed a specific section in our website and it’s entirely committed to prevent and take action against such kind of scammers. If you are facing such kind of threatening calls, which is completely a violation of the fdcpa, you just send an email at kalani@ovlg.com providing the details of the harassment. One of our representatives will get in touch with you shortly and help you report the things either with your local police department or with the FBI Office in San Francisco. I have received numerous calls similar to yours because I applied for one online payday loan. Now I receive these calls constantly threatening me with lawsuits and jail if I dont pay. I simply tell them send me the paperwork or face federal sanctions for their transactions and threats.

Immediately report it to the FTC.

Don’t give them any information or money. There is no doubt that it’s a scam. Try to get the name of the company if possible and report it as a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). You can also file one with the FTC. Be firm if they call again and let them know that you have contacted the authorities. Perhaps, this will be enough to stop them. Consult a consumer attorney (especially specialized in FDCPA) if further problems persist.
