And yes, medical bills can be reported to the CRAs and can show up on your credit report. It all depends on the creditor though.

Is this a payment plan that they’re offering? Well, in that case, you have to sign up a contract and agree to a fixed amount. Explain your situation and try to negotiate with them. Fix a minimal payment amount that you’re sure about paying each month. In case, you have surplus money in a month, you can always forward extra payments so that your debts get paid off sooner.

Else you can opt for a settlement. If you feel that you are not being able to negotiate on your own, seek professional guidance.

Have you validated the debt? How did they receive your account number in the first place?

There is no law that makes it mandatory for you to provide personal information to the collector. However, if they get the account number, they can collect details and even go to the extent of draining it completely. That’s why there’s an unwritten rule – Do Not Give Your Personal, Financial and Account Details to the Collectors.

See, the laws can’t do anything unless there’s some substantial loss. If you suspect fraud, you can consult an attorney and file consumer complaints with the State Attorney General and FTC.
