However, debt purchasers often buy bad checks and start collecting on the money. Contact the original creditor to find out what happened.

I received a collection call today that I owe a debt, which I remember paying off. They say the check had bounced, and so, I still owe them. The check amount was for $200 , but they’re asking me to pay around $900. It’s not even reported on my credit report. They threatened they could sue me if I don’t pay. I kind of doubt that this is a scam. What can I do?

You might be right – this can be a scam. However, debt purchasers often buy bad checks and start collecting on the money. Contact the original creditor to find out what happened. Demand for verification of the debt from the collection agency. Send a debt validation letter and see how they respond. Before anything else, check whether or not the collection agency is legally permitted to operate in your state.
