Well, if you have got a home, you can tap into the home equity too.

I got pregnant and had to give up my job for the time being. I failed to qualify for any kind of state assistance or unemployment, and consequently, my credit card bills started mounting. Now, I am working from home and want to clear the outstanding dues. However, with the limited income I can only cough up a little each month. I don’t want to go for settlement as it dings the credit score. Would consolidation help? Also…. Can I do it on my own? I really can’t afford all the extra charges or fees for agency help.

Yes, you can opt for a balance transfer credit card, or seek out a consolidation loan to do it yourself. Take out the loan with a bank or credit union, and try not to go for private lenders. You can reduce the payments if you place a collateral against the consolidated loan, i.e. make it secured.
