I have outstanding medical bills with a hospital. Is it necessary that I have to disclose details of my retirement account status or that of my wife, if they ask for it?

Retirement accounts like 401k and IRA-s are exempt assets in bankruptcy, so you don’t risk losing them.

The hospital may ask for it, if you’re unable to pay due to financial hardship. Nevertheless, your spouse’s financial details shouldn’t be linked, since you’re the one who owe them the money.

Well, they can obviously ask for it. But you are not legally obligated to reveal those information, until they sue you or get a court order or issue discovery against you.
