Can anyone tell me how much is allowed as cash-in-hand if I use federal exemptions? I tried to search, but got all confused with the various results that turned up.

The present federal exemption as wild card is $1,225. Along with that, you can add up to $12,250 of any amount of unused homestead exemption. Assuming you don't have other property which you would like to save and use all of that exemption for the cash-in-hand, it comes around to a bit more than $13,000 I suppose. Consult an attorney for more specific details.
