My mother has recently passed away and left some valuables to me and my brother in her will like cash and jewellery...could we inherit these items straight away or go to my father as he is still alive?

I'm extremely sorry for the recent loss of your mother. A will can only distribute probate property that includes items that your mother owned individually. The executor of your mother's will should consult with a probate attorney to find out how the assets will be distributed.
