If a band of people start spreading vicious and totally false rumors about you, then it will be regarded as a slander.

Read the definition of defamation provided below and decide yourself!

"An act of communication that causes someone to be shamed, ridiculed, held in contempt, lowered in the estimation of the community, or to lose employment status or earnings or otherwise suffer a damaged reputation. Such defamation is couched in 'defamatory language'. Libel and slander are defamation."

You can better describe it as slander. However, you have to prove that they were spreading the rumors deliberately although knowing those to be untrue. Moreover, you have to show that your reputation was harmed.
