Can I file for defamation against my ex-employer?

Previously worked in a company which shut down for a particular time period, and so I collected unemployment for a few months before I found another job. I was never laid off or quit without notice. Just didn't rejoin. But now as I'm looking forward for a better employment opportunity, my previous employer reported that I did quit. This isn't true. What can I do now, as this might result in the loss of my present opportunity? Should I go for defamation? (for character, maybe?.. am not too sure)
