My wife filled in something in the mailer that said free gift from a company called “PuzleBuzz”. She didn't fill a separate subscription form that was included. After a few days we received a bill in her name that we just ignored. After six months, we got a letter from a debt collector asking us to pay $50 or otherwise they'd take necessary legal action for that. They have also threatened to report the due amount to the credit bureaus. But I don't want to be bullied by paying the amount as they said it to be free. What should I do. Any help would be appreciated.

It's undoubtedly a scam. These scam entities always count on those people whom they can easily dupe. Don't hand over them your hard-earned money. Rather, file a complant against them to the FTC detailing everything. :)

There is no doubt that it's a scam. You should immediately notify this to the credit bureaus and your state's Attorney General. What I believe, your wife didn't read the fine print on the mailer stating - "By accepting this free gift you agree to pay ....". However, if you don't want a hit on your credit report, pay the amount and from now onwards don't fill out any more forms.
