Well, the basic difference between spousal maintenance and alimony is that spousal maintenance is a form of support payment only. But a party can ask for it, even before a divorce filing, if he or she is physically separated from the spouse. Alimony is only awarded after a divorce has been filed.

I don’t know which state you’re from. But usually, alimony isn’t garnished since it’s not typical wage income.
