Can I validate debt, even if I don't receive a collection letter?

Received calls, rather, voice mails from a collection agency (I verified on the Internet). It has been around 2 weeks, and never spoke to them directly. The voice mails are saved on our home number. However, am I not supposed to receive something in writing, say a letter? Should I send the DV letter or wait for theirs? I’m afraid that our 30 days will be over. What to do?
